Technology and Education

Technology in Education

Since the introduction of computers, technology has slowly been working it’s way into the classroom. Many years ago it was hard to adjust to them, but now, I’m not sure whether or not most teachers and students could function without them. All levels of education all around the country have been implementing more and more technology use.  This blog entry will analyze how the media has been covering the use of technology in the classroom.

For the most part, the media has really been covering what kind of an effect new technologies are having on education: Is it positive or negative? Along with that there is a lot of coverage about what is being done with technology in the classroom and where the support for technology in the classroom is coming from.

In a March 8th article written by Lesa Jansen of CNN,  it’s evident to see that technology has had a very positive effect on students and their education. TechBoston, which is located in a heavily populated, low income region of Boston received a grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation when it opened and showcases several forms of technology in the classroom.
Its mission is to better educate kids using technology as an integral part of that education. Every student enrolling at TechBoston receives his or her own laptop. Forget chalkboards, each classroom has its own SMART board, a high tech, interactive white board.
The article also reported that  95% of the student consistently get accepted into college.

On March 9th, Deborah Becker of WBUR radio of Boston also reported on the positive effect TechBoston is experiencing with it’s students. However, her report was geared more toward  President Obama and his  push for technology in the classroom. The article described that President Obama will proposing a $90 million grant program to get technologies in the classroom and in turn improve education.

The San Fransisco Chronicle wrote on March 10th about some other organizations jumping on the bandwagon in support of technology in the classroom.  This article explained how AMX, an organization that helps organizations to use technology effectively,  has partnered with Consortium of School Networking. Together they are hoping to help education leaders address the key challenges that may be arising with the use of so much technology in the classroom.

To end, I have added a video that outlines some of the very positive effects teachers are feeling technology is having within the classroom.

  1. Interesting topic, I know that it is surprised to see just how much technology has been meshed with education as well as live in general. It's surprising at times to learn that kids are getting cell phones and using laptops in school at younger and younger ages. Though I would agree that in today's world technology is almost needed.
Your post flowed well and had good links that seemed to be marked clearly.
The only suggestion I have would be to credit the video and photos to a website or some sort of source....
Keep up the good work :D

  3. You have a lot of good links in your article but it seems like an interview with a local school with some of this technology could have added a good aspect to your blog. Also what is your personal opinion on the use of technology in the classroom? In North Dakota it seems many of the classrooms and computer labs are full of Apple products. Future blogs could compare the type of educational products each company offers to school systems.

I do think technology can have a positive effect on the learning process in our schools. I think the school does a good job of watching what students do online but it also needs to continue at home. The technology can also prepare them for their future employment.

  4. The first thing I noticed is the recency of all your sources. I'm glad you included the dates when you cited your information, because it shows that you have been doing your research and that you're synthesizing the most RECENT developments, which is exactly what readers want. Very good!

You did a nice job of using the inverted pyramid at the beginning; your topic was very clear. However, I feel like the first and second paragraphs sort of drug on--I just wanted to get to the meat of your post. I'd consider condensing them a bit so readers don't lose interest. You could even add a short attention-catching sentence at the very beginning. To compensate for the lost space, I'd suggest adding your own opinion into the post--it would add a nice personal touch!

  5. You did a very nice job showing how recent and credible your sources are. The pictures you used are very good, but I would like to see a caption explaining them a little bit and showing where you got them from. The video you used was also very informational and strengthened the post. I would suggest moving the pictures to the side of the post to give the post a little more visually appealing(just a personal preference).

The only problem I had with the blog itself is the background that you are using. I found myself looking at the background while I was reading the post and lost my place from time to time.

Overall good post and nice look to the blog!
